The Local Community
Right at the heart of the community, Lakeside plays an important role in supporting many local charities. We continuously strive to support local organisations through donations and sponsorship and are proud to have strategies in place to help Lakeside become even more environmentally friendly.
Charitable donations
We are always exploring new ways in which Lakeside can benefit the local community. Some of our recent initiatives include working in partnership with BBC Radio Essex Helpline to raise funds for various charities including animal welfare and children's hospices. We also fund organisations with Lakeside Gift Cards and Vouchers such as Marie Curie Cancer, Thurrock Sea Cadets and many local schools and charities for raffle prizes.
Amount donated Jan-Jun 2008, £14,500.00
Corporate donations
Every year Lakeside donates money for Corporate Sponsorship to local schools, charities and groups for community activity. As part of this year’s corporate donation we have donated to Thurrock Youth Cabinet, R.O.S.E, and St Mary’s Hall for Young People.

Thurrock Community Chest
Lakeside has been a trustee of Thurrock Community Chest for many years and plays an active role in deciding how the Mayor's charity raises and allocates funds to local projects and organisations. As well as providing free promotional space for local groups to sell raffle tickets to our shoppers we host the annual grand prize draw and Lakeside donates £750 Lakeside Gift Vouchers as a raffle prize.

St Luke's Hospice
Lakeside has also been a key corporate partner of St Luke's hospice in Basildon for many years and supports fund raising efforts by the team there. We also host the St Luke's tree of light in the centre every year at Christmas, so that shoppers can dedicate a light in memory of a loved one.
Awareness days
Another way of getting involved in charity events at Lakeside is free promotional space on the malls. If you feel that your charity needs to gain awareness in the community why not speak to us. We can offer a limited amount of free mall promotional space for charity events & promotions throughout the year.
2007 hosted charities such as RSPB, Haven House and The National Blood Service.
Singing at Christmas
Lakeside currently works with local schools and community groups and welcomes their members to carol sing and coin collect in Lakeside during December.

Waste management
Waste management materials include cardboard, metal, plastic, glass, waste electrical electronic equipment (WEEE) and other general waste.
The changes made to the WEEE legislation in 2007, where electrical retailers have to offer a solution to destroy any second hand goods has had a significant impact on the rise in waste at the centre. Another factor that has increased waste would be the amount of retailers changing their packaging from plastic to cardboard to become more eco-friendly.
The table below shows throughout 2007 more recycling has taken place off site, which has decreased the landfill waste to zero.
Energy saving
The technical team at Lakeside are always looking at new initiatives to reduce the centre’s use of carbon to prevent environmental damage.
Technical Services is pleased to announce that for all their efforts, Lakeside has made a 16% saving on last year in energy consumption. Gas usage is down considerably – Jan-Dec ‘07: 2,877,663 KWh compared to Jan-Dec ‘06: 5,330,826 KWh and electricity wasn’t far behind with Jan-Dec 07 reporting 12,922,926 KWh compared to Jan-Dec 06 15,260,262. Electiricity so far in 2008 is down another -18.1% on the previous year, and waste recycling is up an astounding +13.4%
If your store is running a successful CR (Corporate Responsibility) initiative, let us know so we can all work towards improving our community and environment.

Thurrock Schools in need of governors
A number of schools in Thurrock are in need of volunteers to join their governing bodies. National Charity, School Governors’ One- Stop Shop is working with Thurrock Council to find volunteers that are willing to help.
School Governors are critical to the effective running of local schools and with Thurrock’s current vacancy rate at 16% there are about 130 governor vacancies from all categories that need filling, providing you with an excellent opportunity to make an enormous difference in your local community.
